 Astronomy: Wostock spacecraft


On 12 April 1961 the first spacecraft was launched from Russian Kazachstan. The name of the spacecraft was Wostock, meaning "East" and it carried Joeri Gagarin into space.

After one orbit around Earth (1.5 hours) Wostock returned to Earth. Launch was at 9:07 with a landing at 10:55 AM on the same day.
It was the first test how man could and would function in space.
