 Astronomy: Spitzer Space Telescope

In 2003 the Spitzer Space Telescope (formerly named the Space Infrared Telescope Facility) was NASA's third great observatory after the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990 and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory in 1991. The Spitzer Space Telescope is a NASA mission managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The Spitzer Space Telescope was launched into space by a Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral on 25 August 2003. During its 2.5-year mission, Spitzer obtains images and spectra by detecting the infrared energy radiated by objects in space.

The spectrum of electromagnetic radiation.
Infrared light is non-visible to the human eye.

Most of this infrared radiation is blocked by the Earth's atmosphere and cannot be observed with telescopes from the ground. With a telescope in space the infrared light can be observed.
