 Astronomy: Spacemap from the universe

<< Zoom In |

It is very difficult to show one picture as a fair representation of the Universe. The other pictures in this spacemap are focused on one spot or region. But the Universe is everything all around.

Therefore I find it more stimulating to show you 3 pictures and let you do the math.

The expansion of the Universe

The Universe expands in time as this picture shows, think of it as a balloon with a current expansion at 71 km/sec in all directions. This process is called recession and the most accepted theory is that the Universe is thought to expand forever.
At this moment in time the Universe is 13.7 billion years old, our solar system is estimated to be 4.6 billion years old.

Superclusters everywere

The Universe is filled with sheets and walls of galaxies, in between black voids of empty space, all forming a Supercluster. The Universe contains numerous Superclusters. We find ourselves in the Virgo Supercluster.

Many galaxies in every corner

In 1995 the Hubble Telescope aimed at a small empty black piece of sky, with only the size of a quarter at 25 meters!
This assembled picture was the result. The empty piece of sky was not so empty after all. The picture contains at least 1500 galaxies, each galaxy filled with millions of stars.

We may conclude that the Universe is filled with enormous quantities of stars and galaxies.
