The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is located in La Palma, part of the Canary Islands of Spain. The observatory is located 2,4 km above sea level and houses the most prominent telescopes in the world.
Starting from the left the telescopes are the Carlsberg Meridian Telescope, the 4,2 meter William Herschel Telescope, the 0,45 meter Dutch Open Telescope, the 1 meter Swedish Solar Telecope, the 2,5 meter Isaac Newton Telescope, and the 1 meter Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope.
Pioneering observations made recently by these telescopes include galaxies and stars forming early in our universe, comets breaking up, and evidence for exoplanets around Sun-like stars.
Swedish astronomers have plans to build a 50 meter telescope on La Palma, much bigger than the current telescopes.
