Mauna Kea is located at Hawaii in the United States. It is the Hawaiian name for "white mountain", a volcano with on top an French-Canadian-American observatory.
The observatory lies at an altitude of 4 kilometers (nearly 14.000 feet) and consists of a number of telescopes: Subaru, Keck I and Keck II.
At this altitude the observatory experiences low temperatures.
This picture had an exposure of one hour. The star trails are a result of Earth's rotation. The red trail on the hill is from the brake lights of a car.
