Astronomy: Magellan
Magellan was used to map the surface of Venus in detail. Before, in 1968 one of the
Pioneer
spacecrafts carried a radar to construct a global map.
After some delays in the project Magellan arrived at
Venus
on 10 August 1990 and had 84% of its surface mapped in one Venus day (243 Earth days).
In October 1994 Magellan burnt up in Venus' atmosphere.
