John Herschel Glenn was born on 18 July 1921 in Cambridge, United States. Glenn attended college and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
He entered the American Navy in 1942 and joined the Marine Corps in 1943, in which he joined a Marine Fighter Squadron. He flew 59 combat missions during World War II and after that became an instructor in advance flight training.
John Glenn also was deployed for the American operations in Korea.
Glenn was assigned to Nasa in 1959. He flew the Mercury MR-6 in 1962 and was promoted to the rank of Colonel in 1964. In 1965 he retired from the Marine Corps and became a business executive until his election to the United States Senate in November 1974.
John Glenn also flew space shuttle Discovery on mission STS-95 from 29 October to 27 November 1998. He was 77 years old, the mission was to study to effect of space on the elderly.
Glenn retired from the US Senate in January 1999.
