 Astronomy: Joeri Gagarin

Joeri Aleksejevitsj Gagarin was born in Gzjatsk in Russia on 9 March 1931. He was a pilot in the Russian airforce and in 1960 received a space training.

He was the first man to be launched into space onboard a spacecraft. First another pilot was selected to fly in the Wostock, but Russian autorities thought Gherman Titov had a too German name. The Wostock brought Joeri into space on 12 April 1961 and made him famous.

Gagarin was trained as a reserve for the Sojus 1, the spacecraft that had a fatal accident. And after that he was selected for a Russian Moon landing, a project which was cancelled.

Joeri Gagarin died on 27 March 1968.
