M101 is also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy and lies about 25 million light-years away. It's located within the boundaries of the northern constellation Ursa Major.
It has a size of almost twice the size of our own Milky Way Galaxy.
This picture is assembled from 51 exposures from the Hubble Space Telescope in the 20th and 21st century. And completed with additional data from ground based telescopes. This image is one of the most detailed of a spiral galaxy, released by NASA in 2006.
The picture shows stars and dust lanes, along with background galaxies, some visible right through M101 itself.
