Observatories

Roque de los Muchachos Observatory

For centuries man has observed the sky, centuries ago it was believed the skys were perfect and unmutable. Around 1500-1700 this believe changed by great scientist like Copernicus and Galilei. And now we have the tools and equipment to observe stars, nebulae and measure distant planets.

Satellites and rockets

The Hubble Space Telescope

Since the 1950s we have tried to launch probes, satellites and rockets into space and to other parts inside and outside our solar system. From time to time this means accidents and failure, but gradually spaceflight develops further.

Our solar system

Our solar system

There are much interesting objects and bodies in our solar system to observe. For instance, in 1930 Pluto was discovered as the ninth planet. Only in 1978 it was discovered Pluto has a moon. And in 2006 the International Astronomical Union ruled that Pluto no longer is considered to be a planet (because many other similar size rocks were discovered and aren't classified as planets either).

Other solar systems

Formation of planets in Orion

Other stars and orbiting exoplanets are interesting. What is the lifecycle of a star system? Are planets common in the Universe? Is life present on exoplanets? We have more questions than answers, and measurements to help answer the questions must be made over enormous distances. In time we will be able to observe more and progress in puzzeling on mysteries of today.

Galaxies and nebulae

Stars are part of star clusters, nebulae and galaxies in the sky. The vastness of number of stars in one galaxy, and the number of galaxies in the universe is unbelievable.

Supernova's

The remains of Cassiopeia A

The power of a star exploding at billions of miles or km from Earth is enormous. A "nearby" supernova can be easily observed in the daytime sky, as happend before in 1054 and in 1572. With the help of a telescope you can observe supernovae are common and each year many new novae, supernovae and even hypernovea are observed.
