 KNVB Cup 2007


On 6 May 2007 Ajax met AZ in the final of the KNVB Cup. I watched the match myself in stadium De Kuip and it proved to be a very exciting final.

One week earlier, the last round of matches of the season was played and Ajax, AZ or PSV could become national champion of the Netherlands. After 90 minutes, PSV became national champion, having scored one goal more than Ajax. Now, Ajax and AZ had the chance to win another price, to make up for the lost chance on the national championship one week before.

Both teams started the match in a high tempo. AZ scored an early goal in the thrid minute by Dembele, giving them the 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Ajax pressed on the AZ defence and Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored the necessary goal: 1-1, on a pass of Wesley Sneijer. This tie remained until the 90th minute, the official playtime was over. Close to the 90th minute, Ajax player Gabri was sent of the field with a red card after a foul.

In the thirty minutes of extra time both teams didn't score. AZ was much stronger than Ajax in the extra time, given the eleven players of AZ played against ten players of Ajax. Luckily, AZ didn't score a second goal, although many chances were created.

In the penalty series 7 players of AZ scored a penalty in a row. And 7 players of Ajax scored their penalty. Then the young AZ player Donk missed his penalty. And Edgar Davids didn't fail from the eleven meter point and closed the score on 7-8. Ajax won the thrilling match, resulting in the second price of season 2006-2007 after having won the Johan Cruijff Trophy at the beginning of this season.
