On 13 August 2006 Ajax played against last years national champion PSV in the Amsterdam Arena. Ajax won the match with 3-1.
A very nice detail is that the new head coach of PSV is our well known Ronald Koeman, previously head coach of Ajax and back from Portugal.
Both at Ajax, the winner of the Dutch KNVB Cup 2005-2006, and at PSV a number of key players left the team (Hatem Trabelsi, Tomás Galásek, Maxwell and Nourdin Boukhari), and new players were added to the squad (Gabri, Kenneth Perez, Jaap Stam and Roger). This match at the start of the season was the first test how well the clubs had prepared this season.
Especially Ajax played a strong match and created many opportunities to score. The not inspired team from Eindhoven lacked real possibilities to become dangerous over the entire match. After a liberating goal of Rosales, Ajax played easily and in a hard match PSV couldn't get grip on Ajax. Wesley Sneijder made the 3-1 goal, a wonderful shot from a large distance, ending the match and all dreams of PSV.
